Alessandro Ciatti, an historical biographer, wrote:
During the eighth year of the reign of Desiderius (at the time Duke of Spoleto) a certain Longobard Ernerio, built a castle in the mountains of Umbria. He named this castle Castalda. Even today he considers the name from which derived the noble Castaldi family.
